CONCLUSION

In conclusion, I have tried to develop our understanding of the dominant medical culture, that of biomedicine, and some of the ways it constrains our living Franciscan values in the practice of healthcare. I have reflected on the action of relationship and Eucharist through some of Francis’s writings and through my personal experience as physician and patient. Our Franciscan call is to know God in and through the action not of exclusion, but of embrace. Yet responding to this call is difficult; for to know our patient or our disease as sister and brother means embracing the other, and embracing the other means a death to ourselves.

So today I leave us with more questions than answers. How do we continue to translate our Franciscan values into lived reality? How do we more effectively integrate the culture of Franciscan healthcare to the culture of biomedicine? How do we develop a sense of abundance in our healthcare environments, a sense of the gift of life, a sense of the gift of illness and the relationship it calls us to? And finally, will such a relationship-focused, gift-abundant, Eucharist-centered view bring us success in the healthcare marketplace? If not, are we still willing to do it? Are we still willing to be sister and brother?
